Ray Allen, one of my favorite and the NBA’s greatest shooters of all time, is featured in this video going over some of his basketball shooting drills. He also covers some shooting fundamentals that are hallmarks of all great shooters like getting lift using your legs, ensuring you follow through and working on your free throws to get consistency. What I really like about this clip is the drills he goes over can be used by players and coaches at all ages. Ray is also a great guy to watch and learn from as his mechanics and fundamentals are sound.
With respect to fundamentals, he talks about lift, follow through and how to get consistency. Lift on your jump shot is important to generate power for your shot and also to elevate over defenders rushing to block your shot. As Ray says, make sure you knees are bent. Also, staying low ensures you have a good, low center of gravity. This gives you better balance and accuracy. As with so many other sports, the low man wins. Whenever he feels like his shot is off, Ray gets to the foul line to groom his stroke and get back in his rhythm. Here is the place where you can calibrate your shot and find consistency by using your free throw routine and rhythm.
The first basketball shooting drill he goes over here can be used for all ages. I would recommend that unless you are varsity or pro, you use a “Plus 1, Minus 1” or even “Plus 2, Minus 1” variation. The second drill demonstrated works on scoring on a pass curling off a screen.
This guy holds the regular season record for most three-pointers made (269 in 2005-2006) so there is something we can all learn from Ray Allen. Enjoy!
